Fall Tips & Reminders For Pet Owners
Sweet Kitty In Fall Leaves
As the vibrant colors of fall foliage surround us, it's essential for pet owners to consider the unique challenges and opportunities that autumn brings. Here are some reminders and tips for a safe and enjoyable fall for both pets and their owners.
Beware of Toxic Plants: Many common fall plants, such as certain mushrooms and acorns, can be toxic to pets. Keep your furry friends away from these potential hazards, and be cautious during walks in wooded areas.
Seasonal Allergies: Just like humans, pets can experience allergies in the fall. Keep an eye out for signs of allergies, such as excessive scratching or sneezing, and consult your veterinarian if necessary.
Leaves and Yard Cleanup: Fallen leaves can be enticing for pets, but be cautious about them ingesting leaves or the debris you collect. Some leaves may contain harmful substances or parasites. Maintain a clean yard to prevent ticks, fleas, and other pests from multiplying.
Parasite Prevention: While fleas and ticks are less active in the fall, they are still present. Continue parasite prevention measures to keep your pets safe from infestations.
Temperature Awareness: While daytime temperatures can be pleasant, fall nights can get chilly. Ensure your pets have a warm, dry shelter if they spend time outdoors and consider providing cozy bedding.
Daylight Savings Time: When the clocks change, your pet's schedule may need adjustment. Keep their feeding and walking times consistent to minimize disruptions to their routine.
Mental Stimulation: Engage your pets with puzzles, toys, and interactive games to keep their minds active and prevent boredom.
Thanksgiving Treats: While Thanksgiving feasts are a delight, many human foods are harmful to pets. Avoid giving them turkey bones, onions, grapes, and certain spices. Provide pet-safe treats instead.
Fireplace and Heater Safety: If you use a fireplace or space heater, be sure to pet-proof the area to prevent burns or accidents.
Regular Vet Checkups: As the seasons change, it's a good time to schedule a veterinary checkup to ensure your pet's health and vaccinations are up to date.
By keeping these reminders and tips in mind, pet owners can make the most of the beautiful autumn season while ensuring their furry companions remain safe and healthy. Fall can be a wonderful time for pets and their owners to enjoy the outdoors together and create lasting memories.
Pets And Loving Seniors (PALS) Program
A Senior Looking Charming
The Pets And Loving Seniors (PALS) program, operated by PAWS of Bainbridge Island in Washington State, is a heartwarming initiative that recognizes the profound impact pets can have on the lives of seniors. This program brings together two vulnerable populations, the elderly and shelter animals, in a mutually beneficial way.
PALS connects senior citizens with adoptable shelter pets, fostering companionship and reducing social isolation among the elderly. Seniors can experience the joy and affection of a furry friend, improving their emotional well-being and providing a sense of purpose.
Conversely, this program offers shelter animals a second chance at a loving home, providing them with the care and attention they need. The companionship of a senior pet owner often leads to a significant increase in the animals' quality of life.
PALS offers a range of services, including pet adoption assistance, fostering options, and pet care support, recognizing the diverse needs of seniors and their pets. Volunteers are often involved in this program, helping to match seniors with suitable pets and providing assistance with the daily care and needs of the animals.
In essence, PALS creates a beautiful synergy that enhances the lives of both seniors and shelter animals. It fosters lasting bonds and supports the emotional well-being of the elderly, while offering homeless animals a loving home, turning the twilight years into a brighter, cozier chapter for all involved.
Pet Poem Place
I Love Dogs
By Christine, Age 12, Mission Viejo, California USA
I love dogs, oh yes I do,
I love to pet them,
And run with them too.
They keep me company everyday,
They go out with me to skip and play.
Dogs are said to be a man’s best friend,
They always have a heart to lend!

Toto
Not Toto
Toto, the famous dog from "The Wizard of Oz," had a rather unassuming backstory that led to his iconic role in the classic film.
Toto, whose real name was Terry, was a female Cairn Terrier. She was discovered by a Hollywood animal trainer named Carl Spitz at a dog show in 1933. Terry was chosen for the role of Toto due to her small size, distinctive appearance, and, most importantly, her docile and well-behaved nature.
Terry's performance in "The Wizard of Oz" was truly memorable. She had to perform alongside major Hollywood stars and often required careful direction and coordination, considering the special effects and stunts involved in the film.
Toto's fame in "The Wizard of Oz" can be attributed to the endearing chemistry between her and Judy Garland, who played Dorothy. Toto's role as Dorothy's loyal and beloved pet added depth to the story, highlighting the importance of companionship and home.
Following the film's success, Toto became an enduring symbol of loyalty and courage. Terry's performance was acclaimed, and she continued to make appearances in various films, becoming one of the most beloved animal actors in Hollywood.
Terry's legacy as Toto in "The Wizard of Oz" endures as an essential part of cinematic history, a testament to the remarkable bond between humans and their animal companions, and a cherished character in the hearts of moviegoers of all generations.
